Twang, reverb, blasphemy and fun all over the place. That's what you get with Jesus Christ Surferstar. I mean just look at the cover! Jesus riding a gnarly wave, standing on a cross. Somebody's going to hell, I'm tellin' ya. Probably everyone involved, and all of us who bought it, and I guess that means at least the music's gonna be good there. I know what you're thinking. Okay, not all of you, but most of you are thinking the whole idea of a surf version of Jesus Christ Superstar is silly. I thought so too, and I should have known better after being knocked out by the surf version of the American Graffiti soundtrack, which was done by some of the same people. If it's possible - and I'm sayin' it is - this one is more dazzling than Graffiti. The music being honored is more serious than the sweet but simple 50s and early 60s pop tunes on the Graffiti soundtrack, and in keeping with that spirit, these versions carry a sense of mystery and power. Some are played for pure fun, but the majority float on surreal streams and actually take you to interesting places within the framework of the music so that when you listen to the originals again you have new perspective. Go ahead, throw stones, but you'll never know until you try for yourself. I was grabbed immediately by the Overture, which was performed by one of the saviors of surf, Daikaidu (the ones with the Oriental masks, not to be confused with the ones with the Mexican wrestling masks or the ones with... well, anyway, it was Daikaidu). These guys can't even tune up without making it sound spectacular. Kudos to whoever decided to have them kick off. There are so many great performances that mentioning them all would turn this into an article, so I'll speed it up here a bit and tell you that the track list is a guide to interesting bands of surf and indie rock. If you've been out of touch for a few years, you need to discover the new guard. Some of the vets are here, like Susan & The Surftones, who turn in two wonderful contributions, and I swear if Susan's guitar tone gets any sweeter I'm just gonna hang myself by my E string because I'll never get that sound. Oh... Sorry... That's between me and my shrink. The Atlantics and The Hypnotic IV are also veterans of the scene making tasty waves on this clever comp, but this is one case where the individual bands aren't really what it's all about. Whether there was careful coordination or tracks being recorded around the world without any communication between bands, I don't know, but I do know this: Jesus Christ Surferstar is a fantastic 2-CD set that anyone interested in instrumental surf should own. (Note: there are a few vocal tracks, but they are HOT!) If you're afraid of going to hell, don't let that stop you. Just think back on your actions over the past month and you'll soon realize it's a lost cause anyway. Join us. We're hangin' ten over a fiery pit.
